In Unrelated Development News
In unrelated development news, Typica version 2.0 (all platforms) will probably add support for the Lutron TM-925. Support can’t go into the 1.x release series because the data acquisition rate on the spec sheet is too slow (parts of Typica become unreliable with data series at one sample per second or slower).
If anybody from Lutron is reading this, thanks for putting the communications...

Ensure that the roaster will not catch fire
Recently I was asked to do a little more work on the RP120 Profile Roasting Practices class. This was offered at SCAA in April and is being offered again at the Roasters Guild Retreat a couple weeks from now (Kathi Zollman is taking on the lead instructor role this time. She’s a great choice for that so I’m not worried about the lecture portion at all). Apparently there have been...

Facebook Abstainers Could Be Labeled Suspicious →
A German source indicates that not having a Facebook account means you might be a mass murderer. Personally, this strikes me as something along the lines of the statistic where violent sex crime correlates positively with drinking chocolate milk as a child (true, not causal, utterly useless for predictive purposes). I’m not in the face book and haven’t even murdered one person yet....

I’m not a zealot when it comes to whether a coffee should be roasted light or dark or something in between. Given the right coffee, I like a fully developed coffee that hasn’t hit second crack or something quite dark, or something in between. Some coffees take a certain roast particularly well and my preference when deciding how to roast coffees is to try all of them across a broad...

Rate of Temperature Change Indications
Today I was once again asked about the possibility of an indicator for rate of temperature change in Typica. This is one of those features that’s requested every so often but has never been a particularly high priority. Right now it’s possible to customize a Typica configuration to do that. Someone who knows a bit of JavaScript and understands how Typica works could put such an...

Anonymous asked: I downloaded Typica and am trying to get it up and working. I don't have the thermocouple yet. I have a few questions: 1. Can I setup the database without actually having a thermocouple hooked up? If so, how? 2. Is there a way to change the temperature to output in Celsius? Thanks!

Dinner tonight was absurd. I was eating at a restaurant made to look like a gas station and first came a pizza with tomatoes and anchovies so I had a slice of that. Next was another pizza that I don’t remember the toppings on so I had a slice of that. Then there was a pizza topped with chicken and corn so I had a slice of that. Then I was asked if I like meat. I’m thinking meat pizza,...

Brazil Trip: Days 2-3
Today I’m spending the night in what is apparently the Roswell of Brazil. After dinner we went out to see the UFO and the aliens. Nobody was abducted.
Yesterday was the first farm visit of the trip. We drove to Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza near Mococa and this was completely different from anything that I saw on my previous trip to Brazil. Organic, transitioning to fully shade grown,...
Brazil Trip: Days 0-1
To get from Racine, WI to Sao Paulo, Brazil there are really only two options. You can fly out in the morning, spend all day in a connecting airport, and arrive in Brazil the next morning or you can get a direct flight in the evening and get to Brazil at about the same time. Yesterday I roasted coffee all morning, went home to pack, and then went to the airport for an overnight flight. There was a...
Complaining in Random Places Works?
It’s probably just coincidence but where I had previously complained about Disqus comments being broken on one particular page the comments that were not being shown for the past couple months on this page are now back. Since the most common problems are already answered there, hopefully this makes having the thread closed not so bad. I really didn’t want to close the thread but when I...

Busy for the Slow Season
Summer is usually the slow season for me. Business drops a bit compared with the rest of the year, I get most Sundays off, and I’m able to make more time for projects. This year there’s a lot stacking up for the season.
Work continues on the 1.4 release of Typica which I want to get out as quickly as possible. It may not have been worthwhile to put out the Modbus test release as no...

When I get an email from someone who got an error message in a program that I wrote, the error message is quoted in the email, the error message provides instructions on how to resolve the issue, and instead of following the instructions they’ve just quoted they wrote and sent an email asking me what to do:
I should take this as a sign that perhaps the error message needs to be rewritten,...

How things work on programming forums →

ALLEN: Hi, I’m new to driving and I need to move my car back around 5 meters. How can I move the car backwards? : (2 days later.) ALLEN: Hello? This is still a problem. I’m sure someone knows how to do this. BOB: I can’t believe you didn’t figure this out yourself. Just take your foot off the gas and let the car roll backwards down the hill. Tap the bake when you get to where...

1 out of 10 kids on Facebook is cyberbullied
humblybumbly:
bitshare:
Bullying can be pretty common in young children and teens, especially in school. Victims of bullying used to be able to find a safe haven outside of school, to avoid the bullies. But now with social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, and access to the web 24/7, bullies now have an all access pass to anyone they can get their hands on.

Today one of my long term customers took a phone call from a photographer to set up a shoot. The photographer started with, “so I hear you work at a coffee shop.” He does indeed work at a coffee shop (he wrote most of his book here), but he is not employed by the coffee shop. “And how does that fit in with advocacy?” It took the photographer a little while to realize that...
